Packaging Beats Social: Where UK Consumers Actually Want to Hear Your Sustainability Story
The preferred versus current sources gap in UK sustainability communication
The communications channel analysis from the 2022 UK F&G benchmark follows the same structural pattern as the Australian data, with one sharper signal: UK consumers rank product packaging even more clearly as their preferred ESG information source, suggesting a packaging-first strategy is a legitimate priority in this market.
Current sources (where UK consumers learn about brand ESG): News and media is dominant, followed by packaging and advertising. Social media sits in the middle of the distribution.
Preferred sources (where UK consumers would rather learn): Product packaging moves to first. The preference for owned brand channels (website, in-store, company communications) increases. Social media drops in overall importance.
The shift is not uniform across age groups:
- Gen Z and Millennials maintain or increase their preference for social media, particularly company-specific social content. For these cohorts, social platforms are not a falling preferred channel: they are the primary discovery environment.
- Boomers move strongly away from social media as a preferred channel and toward traditional news sources and packaging.
The practical read is that packaging is the one channel that works across all demographics as a preferred ESG information source: it operates at the point of purchase, it is brand-controlled, and it is the format consumers say they want to use to learn about brand sustainability.
The practical implication flagged in the UK benchmark data is the integration of QR codes on packaging, providing a bridge from a summary claim on-pack to detailed program disclosure online. The packaging channel carries the signal; the QR code carries the evidence. Consumers who want to verify can; those who do not still receive the summary.
The question brands face is not whether to use packaging for sustainability communication. It is how much of the story to put there.
Pillar Measure signals, not regulation.
